Overview

Based in the United Kingdom, architect and artist Jim Reed develops his paintings through a sustained engagement with landscape. His architectural training underpins a practice attentive to structure, spatial rhythm and the organisation of form, yet the work remains rooted in direct observation of the natural environment.

Reed’s paintings occupy a space between representation and abstraction. Working from the landscape, he begins with recognisable motifs — horizon lines, tree formations, shifting skies — which are gradually pared back through process. Forms are simplified, edges softened and details reduced, allowing atmosphere and structure to come to the fore. The resulting compositions hold the memory of place without fully describing it.

Each work evolves through a considered process of editing and refinement. Reed repeatedly adjusts tonal relationships and compositional balance, testing how far an image can be distilled while retaining its essential presence. This tension — between depiction and reduction — is central to the practice. The paintings move steadily towards abstraction, yet never relinquish their connection to lived experience of landscape.

Working with clarity and restraint, Reed creates surfaces that register both space and sensation. The works invite close attention, revealing a measured negotiation between what is seen and what is felt.
