Based in Cape Town, South African artist Paul Senyol develops his abstract paintings through an engagement with the built environment. Rooted in a background in skateboarding, his practice is informed by the physical and visual language of the street — the worn edge of a kerb, the geometry of a handrail, the incidental mark left on concrete.
Senyol approaches the city as a site of encounter. Moments gathered while moving through urban space — shifts in surface, fragments of colour, traces of human presence — are translated into pared-back compositions. His work does not describe specific locations; rather, it distils atmosphere and rhythm. Structural lines echo architectural forms, while layered planes of colour suggest the passage of time and repeated use.
Each painting evolves through a process of reduction and balance. Forms are introduced, adjusted and repositioned until a measured tension is achieved. The compositions retain a sense of movement, reflecting the artist’s experience of navigating the city on a skateboard — alert, responsive and attuned to subtle shifts in terrain.
Working with economy and precision, Senyol creates surfaces that hold both immediacy and restraint. The resulting works register an embodied response to urban space, shaped as much by motion and memory as by observation.
